Durante las \u00faltimas tres d\u00e9cadas, estos eventos han afectado de manera recurrente a la acuicultura de moluscos, las pesquer\u00edas bent\u00f3nicas y la salud p\u00fablica debido a la acumulaci\u00f3n de toxinas paralizantes en organismos marinos, principalmente bivalvos filtradores. Ahora, una nueva investigaci\u00f3n internacional aporta antecedentes clave para comprender los factores que favorecen su desarrollo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El estudio, titulado <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAlexandrium catenella blooms driven by extreme thermal anomalies in a fjord system\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, fue desarrollado por investigadores de B\u00e9lgica, Chile y Espa\u00f1a, entre ellos el Dr. <\/span><b>Patricio A. D\u00edaz<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, investigador adjunto de la L\u00ednea de Investigaci\u00f3n 7 \u201cInteracciones sostenibles entre acuicultura, pesquer\u00edas y ecosistemas\u201d del Centro INCAR\u00b2 y acad\u00e9mico del Centro i~mar de la Universidad de Los Lagos. El trabajo analiz\u00f3 por primera vez la relaci\u00f3n entre las floraciones de <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A. catenella<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> y las olas de calor marinas ocurridas en la Patagonia Noroccidental durante el per\u00edodo 2003-2023.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Los resultados revelan una estrecha asociaci\u00f3n entre las anomal\u00edas positivas de temperatura superficial del mar y el desarrollo de estas floraciones. Los investigadores identificaron que los veranos de 2009, 2016 y 2018 concentraron algunos de los eventos m\u00e1s intensos registrados en la serie hist\u00f3rica, coincidiendo con olas de calor marinas de gran magnitud. El an\u00e1lisis estad\u00edstico mostr\u00f3 que las anomal\u00edas t\u00e9rmicas positivas reducen significativamente la probabilidad de ausencia de floraciones y podr\u00edan definir un umbral t\u00e9rmico por encima del cual aumenta la probabilidad de alcanzar altas densidades celulares, particularmente en la regi\u00f3n de Ays\u00e9n.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La investigaci\u00f3n tambi\u00e9n evidenci\u00f3 diferencias regionales importantes. La zona sur de la Patagonia Noroccidental, especialmente la regi\u00f3n de Ays\u00e9n present\u00f3 las floraciones m\u00e1s intensas y las olas de calor marinas de mayor duraci\u00f3n. En contraste, durante los veranos de 2019 y 2020, caracterizados por condiciones t\u00e9rmicas m\u00e1s inestables y anomal\u00edas d\u00e9biles o negativas, se observaron bajas densidades celulares de <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A. catenella<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> y una menor actividad de floraciones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sin embargo, los autores advierten que la temperatura no explica por s\u00ed sola la ocurrencia de estos eventos. Aunque algunas olas de calor marinas coincidieron con importantes proliferaciones algales, tambi\u00e9n se registraron episodios de calentamiento oce\u00e1nico sin desarrollo posterior de floraciones. Este hallazgo sugiere que otros factores ambientales y biol\u00f3gicos, como la disponibilidad de nutrientes y las condiciones de salinidad, as\u00ed como las interacciones biol\u00f3gicas, desempe\u00f1an un papel relevante en la din\u00e1mica de estas microalgas t\u00f3xicas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Los investigadores concluyen que las anomal\u00edas t\u00e9rmicas persistentes e intensas constituyen uno de los principales factores que controlan la magnitud de las floraciones de <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alexandrium catenella<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
